Chrome extension help

How to use Houund: Local SEO Insights for Google Maps, the free Chrome extension that shows every business's Google Business Profile categories right on Google Maps.

Getting started

Install the extension

  1. Open the extension's page in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.
  2. Click Add extension to confirm.

It works in Google Chrome on a computer. Chrome on phones and tablets doesn't run extensions.

Pin it to your toolbar

  1. Click the puzzle-piece icon to the right of Chrome's address bar.
  2. Find Houund: Local SEO Insights for Google Maps and click the pin next to it.

The blue Houund icon now stays in your toolbar, so the on/off switch is one click away.

See it work

Go to google.com/maps and search for a type of business, like "plumber near me". Each result gets a row of blue category chips.

Using the extension

Read the categories in search results

Under each business you'll see GBP categories (★ primary) and a row of chips. The first chip, solid blue with a star, is the primary category. The others are the additional categories on that business's Google Business Profile.

Copy a business's categories

Click a business to open its listing. The same chips show under its name and rating, next to a Copy button. Click it and paste anywhere: you get the categories as a comma-separated list.

Check a competitor

Search for the business by name. The extension works on any Maps search, so you can see which categories the businesses ranking above you use before you change your own.

Turn the categories off or on

Click the Houund icon in your toolbar and use the Show categories on Google Maps switch. Maps updates straight away. You don't need to reload.

See your heatmaps (Houund customers)

Click the Houund icon in your toolbar, then Connect to Houund, and confirm on the page that opens. Then search Google Maps for one of your tracked keywords, like "chiropractor near me". A blue Houund button appears next to Google's Rating and Hours filters, and the grid from your latest scan shows on the map with your average rank in a card under the button. Click a point to see who ranks above you there. Use the card's Location and Keyword lists to see any of your other heatmaps. Click the button to put the card and grid away. The grid needs the Default map type (Layers, bottom left). To stop for good, click Disconnect in the toolbar popup.

Troubleshooting

I don't see any categories

  • Click the Houund icon and check that the switch is on.
  • Reload the Maps tab. A tab that was already open when you installed the extension won't show categories until it reloads.
  • Check the address. The extension runs on www.google.com/maps only, not on country versions like google.co.uk/maps.
  • In an Incognito window, extensions stay off unless you allow them: open chrome://extensions, click Details under Houund, and turn on Allow in Incognito.

A business shows only one category

The extension shows exactly what Google has on that business's profile. Some businesses only set a primary category.

Copy didn't work

If you see "Couldn't copy", select the categories with your mouse and press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac).

It worked yesterday and now it doesn't

Google changes Maps without notice, and a change can stop the categories from showing until we update the extension. Updates install on their own. If the chips are still missing after you reload, email us and we'll look at it.

Privacy and removal

What the extension reads

The category, claim and listing ID features read data Google Maps already loads in your browser and send nothing to Houund or anyone else. They save only your on/off setting, in Chrome's own storage.

If you connect your Houund account, the extension also downloads your locations, tracked keywords and latest heatmap scans, and keeps a connection key in your browser. It checks your Maps searches against your keywords in your browser. Your searches aren't sent to Houund. Details are in our privacy policy.

Remove the extension

Right-click the Houund icon in your toolbar and choose Remove from Chrome. You can also remove it from chrome://extensions.
